Almost by chance I got hold of a clipping from a Mexican newspaper "Novedades" written by Fernando Munoz Altea for his weekly column titled "Blasones" which contained a description of a Coat of Arms of the "DEL REY or REY ancestry". (Unfortunately, the clipping did not have a date) The article offered some hints on the history of the name which seems to have originated in the North of Spain, probably in the province of Navarra, although the author found early traces of the name in Aragon, Galicia, Asturias, Castilla y Madrid. Also in the Norwest of France.
Tradition of the Coats of Arms began in the XIV Century in Europe. In order to identify the knights in armor, their families started embroidering an insignia or sign on the surcoat worn over the armor; that's why it was called "coat of arms" (sac d'armes in France). Through the years, the original identification purpose of the sign in the battlefield, developed into a complex system of inherited social status that expanded all over Europe and was brought to America.
